Why I Removed Google Adsense from the Blog…

Regular visitors may have noticed a small difference to the site lately – I’ve gone and removed the Google Adsense ads!!!
I’d spent some time reviewing the ad revenues from the different ad formats across the site, not that there are that may, and noticed that Adsense wasn’t performing well at all.
Given that it was being placed in prime position, not only on the front page of the site but on each post page, I had expected a much better return. Obviously you, the loyal visitor, were trying to tell me something… It was time to retire Adsense.
At first I was surprised by the actual levels of income over the last few months, especially as Adsense is my favourite ad platform, but the numbers simply do not lie. The income it generates on other sites I own is quite good, in fact I’d go as far as to say that it is one of top income earners overall – but the click through rate for this site is extremely low it became obvious that perhaps it simply wasn’t the ad platform for this site after all!
Hopefully, as a result, the user experience will be better as your not having ads rammed down your throat. I’m not immediately looking to replace Adsense here, but if anyone has any suggestions for alternatives then please drop a comment below.

I have found that adsense performs better for me on other sites as well, other than my work from home site. Overall though, the income from Google ads isn’t for me what it once was, but is still enough to pay a few of those small bills each month. Love your site, and I can certainly identify with this post! Thanks
I agree with you. I’ve found that Adsense hasn’t performed nearly like it used to on my diet blog either. It performed better on a coupon blog I had a while back, though. I don’t run that one anymore, however. It was a lot of work! lol
My diet blog is http://www.hcguberdiet.com if you are interested!
Adsense is huge topic, I chose not to include it in my blog, because of the lists of rules from Google. You have to see what works for you. Sometimes sites do better without it. I might try it in the future but I hear more bad press about it than good.
Don’t get me wrong – I LOVE adsense, but it just wasn’t working here
you are spot on, waste of time , i got kick off by google, would not say why, but even worse on one of my websites there still have the adsense on it. the key word at adword payer would pay £2 a click
google are so big they think they can get away it
great blog
I think that this removal is interesting. it will make the site easier on your readers eyes, that is for sure
I am a newbie to Adsense, but in my opinion Adsense does not belong on a Blog. The blog flows and reads much better without it. As far as suggestions and alternatives for Adsense at the moment I have none, But will be checking back to see if others have any suggestions.
I kinda agree with Phil. Having ads is rather distracting in a blog.. may be its good on commercial sites, but definitely not on blogs… THE reason, why i dont have any ads at my site.
Hey Lyndon,
Personally I’ve never had much use for AdSense. I guess there was a time when small site publishers could make decent money with it, but it certainly wasn’t me.
Adsense isn’t paying what it use to…at least for me. I have been supplementing my income with places like PrizeKings.com. Much easier and quicker to make money.
I feel that AdSense can interfere with the readability of a blog and agree that it does frustrate some readers when adverts are stuck in the middle of a blog post, having said that it works for me but not as all the money making hype makes it to be.
I think there are just certain blogs where Adsense performs well or maybe readers are more and more becoming ‘Adsense-ad blind’ and it’s time to try on alternatives.
I agree adsense really only makes pennys it is for tunneling traffic to other site… The point of a site is to make your self money and for selling your own products or services…. Good read…
I’ve found that Adsense does OK on some of my work at home site but not as well on others. I’m currently toying around with the placement of ads and seeing if that makes a difference.
Hey Lyndon,
I’m in competition with you, but I too agree that Google Adsense is not all that, at least it hasn’t been for me. I’ve had my site up for about 14 months and have not even made $3.00 yet. I’ve been on the first, or from 1-5 page of google for over a year for several keywords terms. The traffic has steadily been on the rise, but nothing to write home about. Good article…and comments.
I agree with most responders and the author. Why should our blog visitors feel like they are landing on a google blog by seeing all the sponsored ads from google. Google to me has lost their minds and it is slowly catching up to them with all the changes they have made over the past year. Forgetting who brought them to become number 1. But with Yahoo and MS teaming up to release their new advertising platform, most work at home network marketers are making the switch. Also there are other ways to adjust for not having adsense ads on blogs. Just by adding a few affiliate links should do it.
Just a quick thank you for this great site and all the info. Keep up the good work. Will come back soon! I still use adsense but might change!
Hi Lyndon,
Yes, Google Adsense seems to be old school and really is’nt much help to anyone these days except for getting Google to notice your site if need be. Personally i do not use it, as i too feels it draws the readers attention away from what you are trying to say.
Hi everyone, I too have placed adsense on my sites but performance is not as I have anticipated. I have a number of sites and would like to know if there is a way of increasing my site traffic ?
I hate the way adsense pays; it feels like they are trying to rip you off by constantly keeping you behind. So, I get why you took it off. I am interested in what you replace it with because I would love to change my blog as well.
I haven’t had any issues with adsense so far but then again, I’m just a newbie blogger and haven’t earned much through advertising revenues.
bidvertiser?
I think the site is better off without Adsense!
I have used Adsense only for the past 2 months, because I started using WebAnswers. You earn Google Adsense based on the questions you ask or answer. Very easy, but income will start off small.
Well written article, thank you!
Affordable web hosting at Blue Fin Hosting.com
I too used adsense in my blog but din’t see relevant ads displaying on my blog so I removed too. I deliver completely sports related information.
I remember once I added in my free WP blog but the ads were showing completely irrelevant and no returns as well even though I wrote on particular topic. I simply removed that.
Yeah I did spread my blog in all social networking sites.
Don’t know what went wrong.
I’ve had similar run-ins with Adsense. Thanks for letting me know I’m not the only one!
Since I am guessing there are other people who were spending money with Adsense and not getting much if anything back, I found an offer (through a friend who won) for a free $250 Visa gift card. No strings attached! I’ve signed up but everyone else should to!! Check it out: http://bit.ly/gO0F17
I have to say thank you for blogs like yours that make life so much easier for a beginner in the online marketing world. Moving from the traditional brick and morter world of business ownership to the virtual world provides quite a learning curve. While I am having success with my venture, it is invaluable to be able to read the opinions and experiences of those more experiences. Thank you.
I’ve never had much luck with adsense either I’m afraid. They just seem to take visitors from my sites and very often they don’t show ads which relate to my content.
I’m having better luck with affiliate links.
As a newbie blogger, Google adsense could be helpful but as of now I’m not using it maybe because I’m just starting or there would be better one to use.
I started my very own blog about 5 months ago and I’m waiting for it to turn six months next month to apply for a Google Adsense account. I don’t have an advertising yet on my blog as of right now. I’m not getting a lot of traffic yet, but I’m working on it. Thanks for this post. Once I have my own ads, I will surely monitor which works and which don’t. More power to your blog! Cheers.
In most of my researches, I found Adsense quiet good. However, I’m still beginning to understand points in creating blogs. But then, thanks for the information.
Now it’s no use I guess. Yeah I am talking about adsense. I removed recently. This is just a waste of space and time. There was no good return.
Karen I agree with you
Thanks
Emily
I am so happy that I found this blog because I was worried that I was the only person in the world not making money through Google Adsense. My site was getting the traffic, but my ads were not making me any money. The click through rate was nonexistent.
Thanks for the information!
Adsense works great for casual admins, but as the site increases in scope you gotta explore bigge roptions.
Great blog. I wish mine can do as well. Oh, yes, I have a blog which I would love for you to pay a visit. It is at http://homebizresources.net/. And if you may, please give me give some comments for improvement.
Thanks. Much obliged.

I agree with you there, although adsense was once the best option to make money through blogs, but as time went by the niche/market has become saturated as many people are trying to build related sites, so competition arises and adwords value for the niche has become lower. But affiliate marketing is there to replace that old beat up way to make money. So I really like your post, it is very engaging, Great content!
Has anyone tired Kontera? They highlight words which bring up ads, maybe this would work better on a blog.
I have ever used adsense but I was out, because the income was too small, joining the paid review maybe would be better
I tend to worry about the ads on my site also. It seems like you have put a lot of work into your blog. Keep up the good work Will bookmark
I am just starting my blog, having finally realized that going to speak to everyone in the universe face to face is not particularly the most efficient way to build a business. lol I decided not to put up adsense as well. Can I ask…have you decided what the alternative will be? I have a feeling it is something….but I am not 100% sure yet what that alternative should be. I have a couple of ideas, though, and I would love to share. Blessings to you and yours!
Funny, I like Adsense and prefer it over Affiliate sites. I guess to each their own.
I feel adsense is alright for a little extra money but as your main source you would have to get extremly lucky to make a living with it. I think a site like yours could benifit with adhits, give it a look. I had it on my review blog at http://www.fastcashrebel.com but it wasn’t converting well but I am not on page 1 of google. Good luck with what ever you decide.
I agree adsense is not what it use to be for making money. I only bring in about less than $1 daily, I do remember me getting 8 clicks in 1 day and only make 65 cents. I am looking for other adsense as well.
Thanks for the post. I have NEVER figured out why someone would want to send people away from their site for pennies when I make hundreds per sale sometimes! Google Adsense makes no sense!
I guess it depends on what the purpose of your website is..if your selling your own product, Adsense may not be the best idea because if may draw attention away from your product. I have created a few sites just for the purpose of Adsense revenue. Run feeds, drive traffic, get clicks
They help pay for the server.
At least it generates SOME income. so i think you should stick with adsense!
hey you yes you. take a look and comment on my blog about Internet marketing too http://imarketingetrich.blogspot.com/ (:
Well, I’m not using Adsense anymore, but it’s not because I chose not to use them. They just disabled my account. It took me YEARS to get my account reactivated and only 6 days for them to disable it again. I didn’t let it get me down though because there are other ad networks out there. I’m trying Infolinks now and they seem to be ok.
I hate Adsense. Not only does it look awful, but most people have caught onto it and don’t click on the links.
You can try a different type of Ads. Me, I only used to use the “Skycrape” type, and it was a mistake. I tried then the “Links” Ads (the ones in one line). They are more discret and don’t even look like Ads. So I put them in the middle of every post. The difference was overwhelming.
I think your site still looks fine without the ads. I have several sites with Adsense and people don’t click the ads. I’m also starting to hear of more instances where Google disables your Adsense account without any justification. I still don’t have alot of content so my ads are just fillers but at some point I plan on removing them.
I really don’t like adwords, it totally puts me off from reading someones blog or website and this is why I would never have it on my own…I value my readers.
