You just cant put a price on freedom. Freelancing has made a huge difference in my life. I worked a traditional sales job for over 10 years that was long hours and weekends but after starting a family I was desperate for change. The ability to bring along my laptop and work from anywhere has changed the way I even look at traditional employment. I also wanted to mention that if its writing your interested in there is software out there like dragon speech recognition that is totally awesome for anyone who wishes they could freelance write but don't have the fastest typing skills.

Cheers

Great post--and true! But I'd have to disagree on one point.

You can't let writer's block strike at all, or you're in trouble. You only get paid if you are writing, and that means you have to find ways around writer's block. You absolutely cannot afford to sit back and get depressed by it.

Writer's block is a symptom of perfectionism. While we all want to find the "perfect" way to say something it rarely works out that way. Your job is to convey the information in a clear, entertaining way. That means, sometimes, that you just push ahead and write what you mean, even if you can't find just the right way to say it.

Outlining, clustering, researching for talking points--all of these can help.

There are, of course, days where you're just not going to be as productive. Tell your brain (literally tell your brain) to work on the problem quietly and without you while you do the dishes or go for a walk. See if you can't come back and at least push on towards your quota for the day.

Most of all, tell yourself that it's okay to be less-than-perfect. If you can't manage great, good is just fine.

This is a great article. I Writing from home can really be a challenge, but if when you find your niche and work on, it can become a very lucrative and rewarding way to make a living.

I work from home and I feel it is great. I budget my time so that I have "me" time. I work from 8 am to 5 pm everyday, like a regular job. The only difference is that I take mini-time outs to feed the animals or clean or even shop online if I am wanting to. The author was right when he said you have no one to blame but yourself if you can not pay the bills. You can do anything if you set your mind to it!

I agree with you. You are on one of the few authors who i know can openly tell people about the difficulties of writing from home. I have been writing for some time, at first it was hard but as i always say, if you stick for long enough there is light at the end of the tunnel A great resource for prospective work at homes is http://www.onlineriches.org
